Slightly White

slightlywhite_webSlightly White is a surprisingly engaging three-piece rock band based out of Aspen, Colorado. Comprised of three talented young men, the band has been met with generous support and a dedicated following.

All three members: Miles Phillips (bass/ vocals), Obadiah Jones (guitar/ vocals), and Cooper Means (drums/percussion) were born and raised in the Roaring Fork Valley and are currently juniors and Aspen High School. The band started in 2003 at the Aspen Community Schooland has since opened for such legends as Joe Cocker, Little Feet, Dave Mason Band, Mini Kiss, Led Zepagain, Hells Bells, and many more. They have also placed first five times in the local Battle of the Bands competition.

Their genre is classic rock by bands such as the Beatles, Pink Floyd, Jimmy Hendrix, U2 and Led Zepplin as well as more contemporary artists - sprinkled with originals, this band’s play list pleases them all.

Slightly White is currently performing concerts all over the valley at varied venues and events.


Judge Roughneck

judgeroughneckHaving a loyal nationwide fan base, and repeatedly voted Denver's best ska/reggae act, Judge Roughneck has gained both commercial success and critical acclaim. Due to the band's widespread appeal, they have been asked to perform The "Reggae on the Rocks Festival" at Colorado's Red Rocks Amphitheater several times.

 

JR routinely draws hundreds of fans to its shows across Colorado, including back-to-back-to-back sellout shows at Herman's Hideaway in Denver, capacity 500. The band has also been played on numerous Denver area commercial radio stations including KBCO, KTCL, KBPI and Alice 106.

 

Judge Roughneck's unique brand of pop-reggae pays tribute to both the early '80's British 2-Tone movement and the original jazz-laced ska of Jamaica, while infusing a generous dose of soul and R&B. The result is a unique, high-energy dance sound that entertains a wide audience.

 

Due to the band's appealing sound and professionalism, Judge Roughneck has been asked to perform with such international greats as UB40, Burning Spear, English Beat, The Skatalites, The Specials, The Wailers, and Fishbone, and has aired on over 200 radio stations nationwide. Judge Roughneck also landed a promotional deal with Corona Beer, which is aired the song "Hot!" on U.S. radio.

 

In 2001, Judge Roughneck was one of four bands to reach the finals of the Ernie Ball/Warped Tour Battle of the Bands. Over 4000 band from North America entered the contest, which flew the regional winners to Dallas, TX to compete in the semi-finals, and then to Los Angeles, where the finals were held at the downtown Bonaventure Hotel during the NAMM Convention.

 

The band features an all-star line-up of Denver musicians including Byron Shaw on lead vocals, bongos and melodica, Brian Handlos on bass, Zac Tschillard on guitar, Zach Pietlock on drums, Jon Hegel on saxophone and Rolf Reitzig on trumpet.

 

On March 9, 2002, Judge Roughneck released its 3rd release, titled, "True". The 13 track CD guides the listener on a musical journey through dub-reggae, old-school 60's ska, 2-Tone-influenced pop-reggae and hip-hop. The CD was produced by Kyle Jones and Chris Reidy and was mastered by Grammy Award Winning engineer, David Glasser at Airshow mastering in Boulder, CO.


GSHS Percussion Ensemble

percusionens_webThe GSHS Percussion Ensemble is a performance and competition group made up of percussion instruments including marching drums, marimbas, xylophones, tympani, keyboards and more. Members of the ensemble are expected to maintain high standards in every aspect of their lives. Academic success and personal responsibility are emphasized. Every student desiring to become a member must audition and make a substantial commitment to rehearsal time outside of their busy school day. The ensemble students are of diverse ages and backgrounds but share a passion for music and performance.

The ensemble is the only group of its kind in western Colorado. Founded in the spring of 2005, the group has captured one first place and two second place state titles in their short tenure. The ensemble made their first appearance at WGI World Competition on April 13, 2010. They finished 6th place in their division.

The community will get opportunities to hear the GSHS Percussion Ensemble playing an original composition “Where the Rivers Meet: A Celebration of 125 Years of Glenwood Springs” on the Strawberry Days stage and at the community picnic celebrating Glenwood Springs’ 125th anniversary at Two Rivers Park on July 4th. The piece was written by Mike Nevin of Philadelphia.  Mr. Nevin visited GlenwoodSprings last year to conduct a workshop with the ensemble.  He was inspired by our area and set his inspiration to music.


101st Army Band

The 101st Army Band can be seen in almost any part of the state performing for the general public in venues ranging from formal concert halls to city parks. The band routinely supports civic events and regional band festivals, as well as military functions such as change of command ceremonies, mobilizations, and military balls. The 101st Army Band is much more than just a concert band. They also provide several smaller musical ensembles that play a great variety of musical styles, which helps them to reach and appeal to a larger audience.


Starcher Hutson

starcherhutson_webStarcher Hutsen is a progressive acoustic band based in Glenwood Springs, CO. They are a regularly seen in local venues around the Roaring Fork Valley, as well as at corporate events large and small. This will mark the first time Starcher Hutsen has appeared at Strawberry Days.

 

The band features artists Stan Orr, Matt Stinson, Kelly Gabossi, Sonja Linman, and Melissa Gabossi. Stan Orr began performing in his tender years, plying his craft as an under-aged singer/guitarist in the back road bars and coffee houses of Oklahoma. Matt Stinson cut his teethon classic R&R and R&B, and together with his own acoustic style creates a sound unique to his own. Vocalists Kelly and Melissa Gabossi are well known natives of the Valley, having performed in front of audiences since they were mere toddlers. Piano/vocalist Sonya Linman is a long time valley resident who finds she learns the most about life at the feet of rebels and children.

 

The band recently appeared at the Wheeler Opera House as part of the Mercy & Sharing Benefit Concert for the Children of Haiti, and will appear at the Mirage in Las Vegasin November 2010. This summer Starcher Hutsen is appearing on Tuesday nights at the Riviera Restaurant’s Patio in Glenwood Springs.

 

The band has developed a small but loyal following in the two years it has been performing. According to Glenwood Springs resident Alexandra Yajko, “I am a huge fan of Starcher Hutsen’s music! Every time they play, we are there, and we love it.”

encore_web Encore, an incredibly talented group of musicians from Scottsdale, Arizona, was put together as an all-star house band for the world famous Barcelona night club in Scottsdale, Arizona. Encore is fronted by regional headliner, Dawn Jameson.

 

Encore is fronted by regional headliner, Dawn Jameson.  Voted “Arizona’s Best Celebrity, 2009,” Jameson has appeared on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, MTV and Bravo. She has shared the stage with a long list of national recording artists including Gene Simmons, Snoop Dogg, and Lloyd. Her country band “Daisy Train” is also gaining major popularity in Las Vegas.

 

Encore includes also includes drummer Dan Petrosino, bassist Ray Thiry, keyboard and saxophonist Shea Marshall, and turntabalist DJ Brazilia. The group fuses a live band, a great dj, and an amazing start to create a truly unique classic and modern dance experience. Encore is quickly becoming one of the most sought after groups in the United States for luxury weddings, corporate events, and large parties.


Earthbeat Children's Choir

Through this venue, kids feel safe to start where they are and rise to their full potential as singers, songwriters and creative artists. There is a creative artistic spirit in every child waiting to be released.

 

 

The Earthbeat Children’s Choir offers a valuable community service to the Roaring Fork Valleycommunity through arts education in areas of music, singing and songwriting. Earthbeat partners with and supports local governments, schools and organizations to provide comprehensive musical arts and education services.


Glenwood Springs Center for the Arts Dance Company

The Glenwood Springs Center for the Arts Dance Company provides an opportunity for dancers to learn how to create and perform advanced choreography in all dance styles on a professional level. The program includes Senior and Junior Dance Companies. Junior Company dancers range in age from 9 to 14 years, and Senior Company dancers are 15 years and older. The Arts Center Dance Company is a year-round program with scheduled performances throughout the year.

Glenwood Dance Academy instructors are all professionally trained dancers, and many are still active dancers. All are dedicated to providing a positive and rewarding dance experience for their students.

 

 


Defiance Stringband

defiancestringband_web The Defiance Stringband is an “Acoustic/Eclectic/Americana” quintet featuring a variety of musical styles including old-time, folk, bluegrass, country, Celtic, ethnic and original compositions.  This amazing troupe of musicians north of Aspenand west of Vail has generated tremendous buzz and excitement in the mountains and valleys west of the Great Divide. Creating superb musical offerings for just over 1/100th of a century, this fun and talented quintet  is 100% pure fiddle, mandolin, banjo, guitar, bass and harmonious vocals, yielding a genuine roots musical experience.  The group includes Don and April Paine, John Sommers, Robert Rosenberg and Don Kaufman. Music with an altitude.


Bright Henry

brighthenry_webTed Bright and Eileen Henry met without introduction when they found themselves sharing a microphone at a late night jam session in Lafayette, Colorado in the spring of 2007. Their extraordinary vocal blend was captivating, and within a few weeks, they were fronting the Boulder-based band, Monkeywood Steel. Shortly thereafter, they began performing as the duo of Bright Henry. Bright and Henry construct exquisite harmonies that can be seductively delicate or powerfully robust as they weave their way through their mostly acoustic repertoire of original compositions and blues, rock and country-rock covers of Elvis Costello, Tom Petty, Leonard Cohen, Bonnie Raitt, Steve Earle, Lyle Lovett, Paul Simon, Ray LaMontagne, Richard Thompson, John Prine, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Elton John, Lucinda Williams, and others.


Rush Street

rushstreet_webGlenwood’s own Rush Street band burst onto the scene in 2005 and has quickly become a valley favorite. Featuring a high-powered mix of classic rock and Chicago blues, the band’s power trio format is driven by long-time local music scene veteran Mike “Huge” McFerrin on drums, the hard-driving bass attack of John “Johnny-Cakes” Tolan, and the incendiary guitar antics of the semi-legendary Scott “El Fuego” Brewer. The band has performed extensively throughout the valley and covers the classic rock hits of The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Cream, Jimi Hendrix, Tom Petty, and ZZ Top, as well as electric blues greats Stevie Ray Vaughn, Buddy Guy, and Johnny Winter.

 


 

Steve Skinner Stimulus Package

steveskinnerphoto_web As a result of the convergence of several longtime Roaring Fork Valley musical institutions, The Stimulus Package is based largely on the original “resort rock” of front man Steve Skinner. Steve has had a colorful stage and recording career and has more than a dozen original albums to his credit. He has performed for MTV and was featured on VH-1's “Rock 'n' Roll Record Breakers.” His original rock opera, "Umbrella Man" was performed at the Wheeler Opera House in two separate runs. At drums Corey Spagnolo brings a taste of Los Angeles to the group with an extensive career doing session work in Southern Californiaand a stint touring with top 40 artists “The Chambers Brothers.” Louie Girardot, formerly of longtime local favorites “Louie & The Lizards,” rounds out the threesome on bass guitar and lead and backing vocals. The band’s setlist features original songs that are inspired by the daily joys, trials and tribulations of valley life and beyond, at times tiptoeing along the edges of reverence and political correctness.
